CHAPTER 206
THE SWORD OF JUSTICE AND UTTER DESTRUCTION
The sword of justice hung over them.
They knew the laws of God.
They knew that they had transgressed those laws.
They knew that they had trampled the commandments beneath their feet.
Their ignorance did not excuse them.
Their knowledge testified against them.
Their choices testified against them.
Their works testified against them.
They loved glory.
They loved the vain things of the world.
They sought power while the people suffered.
They withheld assistance while armies contended for freedom.
They allowed the righteous to hunger.
They permitted iniquity to wax strong.
The sword of justice did not hang over them without warning.
The word of God had been declared.
Their duty had been made known.
The suffering of the people had been reported.
Assistance had been requested.
Repentance remained possible.
Obedience remained possible.
The correction of their course remained possible.
Yet justice could not remain suspended forever.
The sword would fall upon the unrepentant.
It would visit those who knowingly continued in iniquity.
It would come even to utter destruction.
Utter destruction is the completed fruit of continued rebellion.
It followeth the rejection of warning.
It followeth the refusal of repentance.
It followeth the love of power above righteousness.
It followeth the pursuit of glory above service.
It followeth the trampling of God’s law beneath the feet.
The Lord suffereth long with the children of men.
He sendeth warning before judgment.
He offereth mercy before destruction.
He commandeth repentance before the sword falleth.
But mercy doth not transform continued wickedness into righteousness.
Patience doth not abolish justice.
Warning doth not remove accountability from those who reject it.
The governors possessed authority.
Authority increased their responsibility.
Their offices required service.
Their offices required the preservation of the people.
Their offices required obedience to the laws they administered.
But authority without righteousness became corruption.
Power without service became oppression.
Glory without humility became vanity.
Leadership without duty endangered the entire people.
Moroni sought not power for himself.
He sought to pull down unrighteous power.
He sought not the honor of the world.
He sought the glory of God.
He sought the freedom of his country.
He sought the welfare of the people.
His words were severe because the danger was severe.
The armies lacked provisions.
The defenders of liberty faced destruction.
The government had failed to administer relief.
The progress of a righteous cause was being impeded.
Therefore the warning came plainly.
Repent.
Send provisions.
Send men.
Fulfil the word of God.
Cease strengthening iniquity.
Cease endangering the righteous.
If the warning were obeyed, destruction need not follow.
If repentance occurred, the sword need not complete its descent.
If assistance were given, the suffering people could be strengthened.
If duty were fulfilled, lawful authority could again serve its proper purpose.
But if pride continued, justice would answer.
If vanity continued, judgment would come.
If the laws of God continued to be trampled, the sword would fall.
If righteous people were knowingly abandoned, utter destruction would follow the rejected warning.
Therefore seek not power for thine own advancement.
Seek not worldly honor.
Seek not glory while others suffer.
Use authority to serve.
Use strength to preserve.
Use provisions to relieve hunger.
Use knowledge to fulfil duty.
Hear warning before judgment arriveth.
Repent while mercy remaineth extended.
Adhere to the word of God.
Let justice awaken thee.
Let mercy turn thee.
Let responsibility govern authority.
Let the welfare of the people stand above personal glory.
Let righteousness restrain power.
Let humility replace vanity.
Let obedience prevent destruction.
For the sword of justice hangeth over persistent iniquity.
But the way of repentance remaineth open before it falleth.
Amen.
