Hosted in partnership with The Branch of the Firstborn: Peoples of the Americas, this unique event offers attendees the opportunity not only to view and study the copper tablets, but also to participate in ceremonies, teachings, language instruction, field experiences, and discussions designed to place the records within their broader cultural and spiritual context.
More Than an Academic Conference
Unlike a traditional lecture series or historical symposium, this gathering is intentionally experiential.
Participants will be transported from Missoula, Montana, to a sacred lodge location where they will spend three days immersed in learning, reflection, ceremony, and community. Food, lodging, and transportation to and from the airport are included as part of the event experience.
The purpose is not merely to examine artifacts. It is to better understand the traditions, teachings, and preservation efforts connected to these records and the Indigenous communities that have safeguarded them.
The event organizers emphasize respect, confidentiality, and cultural responsibility throughout the gathering. Attendees will be asked to follow specific protocols, including signing a non-disclosure agreement and temporarily securing electronic devices to protect the location and integrity of the records.
Exploring the Sacred Records
One of the highlights of the event will be direct engagement with examples of the Midewiwin copper plates.
Participants will receive an introduction to Midewiwin language traditions and symbolic systems before examining plate imagery and learning methods used to interpret the records.
